The Summer Slow Down

Simple Ways to Slow Down and Enjoy Your Garden This August

Summer has a way of moving faster than we'd like.

One minute we're planting spring flowers, and before we know it, August has arrived. Our calendars fill with vacations, family gatherings and endless to-do lists, and sometimes we forget the very reason we planted a garden in the first place.

A garden isn't just something to care for.

It's a place to care for yourself.

Whether you spend five quiet minutes with your morning coffee, enjoy an evening walk among the flowers or simply pause to admire a beautiful bloom, gardens have a way of helping us slow down and appreciate the present moment.

This week, I'd like to share a few simple ways to embrace the art of slow gardening and make the most of the final weeks of summer.

Scents That Help You Slow Down

Some of the most memorable gardens aren't just beautiful, they're fragrant.

The scent of a garden has the power to transport us, helping us feel relaxed, refreshed and connected to nature.

Consider adding calming plants such as:

  • Lavender
  • Chamomile
  • Rosemary
  • Mint
  • Jasmine
  • Lemon Balm

Plant them near your patio, front entrance or favourite seating area where you'll naturally enjoy their fragrance every time you step outside.

Herbs like rosemary and mint can also be harvested for teas, summer drinks and cooking, bringing the calming experience from your garden right to your table.

Garden Tip: Brush your hand gently across lavender or rosemary as you walk by. Releasing their natural oils fills the air with fragrance and creates an instant sensory experience.

Find Your Calm at Yoga in the Greenhouse

Imagine beginning your day surrounded by thousands of lush green plants, breathing deeply while natural light fills the greenhouse.

Yoga in the Greenhouse isn't just about exercise—it's about reconnecting with yourself in one of the most peaceful environments imaginable.

Studies have shown that spending time around nature can help reduce stress, improve mood and leave us feeling more refreshed. Pairing that experience with gentle movement and mindful breathing makes it an unforgettable way to start the day.

Whether you're new to yoga or have been practicing for years, our greenhouse offers a beautiful setting to slow down, stretch and simply enjoy being present.

Sometimes the best thing we can grow is a little more balance.

Your New Favourite Summer Ritual

One of the simplest ways to slow down doesn't require a perfectly designed garden.

It simply requires making time.

Treat yourself to a visit to the greenhouse, pick up your favourite coffee from Banana Bike Café at our Barrie location and take an unhurried walk through the greenhouses.

Notice the colours.

Take in the fragrance of fresh flowers.

Listen to the sound of water features.

Discover a new houseplant or perennial.

Sometimes inspiration arrives when we aren't looking for it.

The greenhouse isn't just a place to shop, it's a place to wander, dream and reconnect with nature at your own pace.

Perhaps that becomes your new favourite August tradition.

Find Peace in the Sound of Water

Your backyard should be more than just a place to mow the lawn or water the flowers.

It should be somewhere you want to spend time.

One of the easiest ways to create a relaxing atmosphere is by introducing the soothing sound of moving water.

Whether it's a bubbling fountain, a decorative water feature or a cascading water wall, flowing water creates a peaceful backdrop that softens everyday noise and encourages you to slow down.

Pair it with comfortable seating, beautiful containers, soft lighting and layers of lush greenery to create an outdoor space that feels like your own private retreat.

The goal isn't to create a perfect garden.

It's to create a garden that makes you feel at peace.

Bring the Calm Indoors

The calming benefits of plants don't have to end at the patio door.

Houseplants bring life, texture and natural beauty into our homes while asking very little in return.

If you're just getting started, these easy-care favourites are perfect choices:

  • Snake Plant
  • ZZ Plant
  • Pothos
  • Peace Lily
  • Spider Plant

These plants thrive in a variety of indoor conditions and are ideal for busy households or anyone new to houseplants.

Place one on your desk, kitchen counter or bedside table and enjoy a little greenery wherever you spend your day.

Sometimes one simple plant is all it takes to brighten a room…and your mood.

Slow Down and Enjoy the Season

Gardening isn't a race.

There will always be another weed to pull, another flower to deadhead or another project waiting for the weekend.

But August reminds us to pause.

Enjoy your morning coffee outside.

Read a book beneath a shade tree.

Take a walk through the greenhouse.

Join us for Yoga in the Greenhouse.

Breathe in the scent of lavender.

Listen to the gentle sound of flowing water.

Because the most beautiful gardens aren't remembered for how many flowers they contained.

They're remembered for how they made us feel.

This August, give yourself permission to slow down.

Your garden will still be there.

And you'll enjoy it even more.

Happy Gardening!
