Pumpkin Patch to Porch

How to choose, care for & display your pumpkins this fall.

Pumpkins are one of the easiest ways to bring instant fall colour to your home. Whether you’re decorating your front porch, creating a Thanksgiving centrepiece or getting ready for Halloween, a little pumpkin know-how can help your display last longer and look even better.

Here’s how to make the most of pumpkin season.

1. Pick Your Pumpkin — More Than Just Orange

When you picture a pumpkin, you probably picture bright orange.

But walk through our greenhouses right now and you’ll see just how much variety there really is.

Think classic orange, creamy white, blue-grey, deep green and wonderfully warty — plus plenty of different shapes and sizes.

When creating a display, don’t be afraid to mix them.

Try combining:

  • Different colours
  • Tall and squat shapes
  • Smooth and heavily textured varieties
  • Large statement pumpkins with smaller accents

Instead of choosing one colour, create a collection that feels layered and intentional.

The best pumpkin displays aren’t always the most coordinated — they’re the ones with personality.

2. Make Your Pumpkins Last: Simple Care for a Longer Display

Once you’ve found the perfect pumpkins, a little care can help them stay looking their best.

Start by choosing pumpkins that are firm and free from soft spots, bruises or signs of rot.

Once they’re home:

Keep Them Dry

Excess moisture can encourage decay, so avoid letting your pumpkins sit in standing water.

Give Them Airflow

Don’t pack pumpkins tightly together. A little space between them helps keep moisture from becoming trapped.

Watch the Weather

If a hard frost is expected, consider moving your pumpkins somewhere protected.

Check Them Regularly

Give your display a quick inspection every few days. If one pumpkin starts to soften or rot, remove it before the problem spreads to neighbouring pumpkins.

A little attention can go a long way toward keeping your fall display looking fresh.

3. Clean Them Up: Give Your Pumpkins a Fresh Start

Pumpkins come straight from the field, so a little dirt is completely normal.

For decorative pumpkins, gently wipe away dirt and debris with a damp cloth, then allow the surface to dry completely before displaying them.

If you’re planning to eat your pumpkin, wash the outside under clean running water and gently scrub away stubborn dirt with a clean produce brush.

4. When Your Pumpkin Becomes a Snack

You’ve created the perfect porch display.

Unfortunately, the local wildlife may agree.

Squirrels, deer and other critters can be attracted to pumpkins, especially once they’ve been carved.

So what can you do?

Create a Little Distance

Elevating pumpkins on steps, tables or planters can make them less accessible to some animals.

Use Physical Barriers Where Practical

A physical barrier is one of the most reliable ways to protect outdoor displays from wildlife.

Consider a Repellent

Wildlife repellents can be another option. If you choose one, make sure it’s labelled for the animal you’re trying to deter and follow the product directions carefully.

And remember: never use anything on an edible pumpkin that isn’t specifically intended for use on food.

Skip the soap, detergent and household cleaners when washing pumpkins intended for eating.

5. Carved or Whole? Get the Most Out of Your Pumpkin Display

If you’re decorating for Halloween, you might be tempted to carve your pumpkins as soon as you bring them home.

Our advice? Wait.

Once a pumpkin is carved, the exposed interior is much more vulnerable to moisture, mould and decay. Waiting until closer to Halloween can help your jack-o’-lantern look its best when the big night arrives.

Until then, enjoy your pumpkins whole!

Create beautiful displays by:

  • Mixing colours and textures
  • Layering different heights
  • Pairing pumpkins with mums and fall plants
  • Adding ornamental grasses or seasonal foliage
  • Grouping pumpkins together instead of spacing them evenly
  • Using unusual pumpkins as statement pieces

And when it’s finally time to carve, you’ll have a beautiful display ready to become the centrepiece of Halloween.

A Little Pumpkin Inspiration

Think Beyond the Front Porch

Pumpkins aren’t just for Halloween.

Use them to create a beautiful fall moment on:

  • Your front steps
  • Dining table
  • Entryway
  • Fireplace mantel
  • Outdoor entertaining space
  • Thanksgiving table

Mix natural textures, seasonal flowers and pumpkins in different colours to create a display that can take you from early fall right through Thanksgiving and Halloween.
